Bayern Munich Beats Real Madrid in a Penalty Shoot

From first league, Real trailed by a goal then Cristiano Ronaldo strikes -- the first, a penalty and next is a neat low

finish which put them in control. With a spot kick done by Arjen Robben, he leveled the tie for Bayern. No further

goals meant a shoot-out, which Bastian Schweinsteiger settled to send his team to the final goal. While Mario

Gomez and David Alaba scored for Bayern, the goalkeeper Manuel Neuer played a major part saving real's first two

penalties, from Kaka and Ronaldo. This was the second time in major Champions League shoot-outs ronaldo had

missed from the spot. If you remember he also failed for Manchester United in the 2008 final against Chelsea. So let's

PSG close gap on leaders, Ajaccio boost survival hopes

Paris Saint Germain closed the gap on leaders Montpellier with a thumping 6-1 win over struggling Sochaux.

Javier Pastore set PSG on their way in the fourth minute and although Modibo Maiga levelled eight minutes later, it was just short respite for Sochaux. Thiago Motta restored PSG's lead on 25 minutes and Jeremy Menez added a third on the stroke of half-time.

Nene then took centre stage with two goals in five second-half minutes and Sylvain Armand completed the rout in injury-time. The win moves Carlo Ancelotti's men to within two points of Montpellier, while Sochaux drop to second from bottom.

Lyon boosted their hopes of a top four finish as they came from behind to beat Lorient 3-2 at Stade Gerland. Lorient threatened a major shock when Kevin Monnet-Paquet and Mathias Autret fired them 2-0 in front.

Lyon pulled a goal back on 38 minutes when skipper Cris volleyed home and Lisandro Lopez drew the home side level 13 minutes from time. Substitute Bafetimbi Gomis netted the winner for Lyon five minutes from time to lift Lyon above Rennes into fourth.

Ajaccio moved out of the relegation zone with a goalless draw at home to Nancy. The home side came closest to scoring when Ilan struck the crossbar at the end of the first half, but they had to settle for a point which moved them clear of the bottom three.

Montpellier move five-points clear; Lille still in race; Bordeaux win

Souleymane Camara's goal helped Montpellier to a narrow victory over Valenciennes as they opened up a five-point lead over Paris St Germain.

Montpellier-v-Rennes-Souleymane-Camara-_2639495.jpg (660×350)

Champions Lille kept themselves in the title race with a vital away win. There were wins for St Etienne, Evian, Rennes and Nice while Marseille's winless run in was extended to 12 games.

An early goal from Souleymane Camara proved enough for Montpellier to eke out a narrow victory over Valenciennes and establish a five-point lead over Paris St Germain at the Ligue 1 summit. Camara put the hosts ahead after just four minutes and although Montpellier missed numerous chances to ease their nerves with a second, it proved enough for them to pull clear of PSG, who play their game in hand against Sochaux at the Parc des Princeon Sunday. Champions Lille kept themselves in the title race with a 2-0 victory at relegation-threatened Dijon in a match which saw three players sent off.

LOSC were a player down from the 36th minute, when Idrissa Gueye was sent off for violent conduct, but the visitors made light of their numerical disadvantage and notched twice before half-time through Rio Mavuba and Eden Hazard to seal the points. Dijon defender Abdoulaye Meite evened up the numbers when he too was dismissed for violent conduct in the first minute of the second half and Bennard Yao Kumordzi followed suit 13 minutes from time - putting paid to the hosts' hopes of getting anything from the game. The result was a fourth win in five games for Lille, and kept them seven points behind Montpellier with five games remaining, while Dijon were left in 16th place and only a point above the drop zone.

Cole hoping for Lille stay

Midfielder would welcome the chance to make loan deal permanent

Joe-Cole-006.jpg (460×276)

Joe Cole would welcome the opportunity to make his stay at Lille permanent, but concedes that any decision regarding his future rests with Liverpool.

The England international is edging towards the end of a season-long loan agreement with the reigning French champions. Having been deemed surplus to requirements at Anfield, it appears unlikely that he will be drafted back into the Reds fold this summer. Cole admits he would rather bring the curtain down on a forgettable spell on Merseyside, with a high-profile switch in 2010 having failed to live up to expectations. The 30-year-old has enjoyed his time in Ligue 1 with Lille, with regular football rekindling his passion for the game, and he is waiting to learn what Liverpool have planned for him. "I've not spoken to anyone at Liverpool," he said in the Liverpool Echo.

Football liga match preview Toulouse Vs Lyon

Toulouse battled for a point in the hostile stadium of Caen. The home side is still in contention with the relegation spots and is on alert. It has good midfield but poor convertors upfront. Nevertheless, Toulouse often manages to sneak some points against the better French sides, last one against OM away from home.

Lyon had a lucky escape against Montpellier in the midweek match. The team had to wait until the final minute to score the winner, and as always there were lots of mistakes in defense. The defense will be under pressure once again, as Toulouse at home knows how to do this.

Rennes maintain European push

French side bounce back from cup humiliation

166631.jpg (570×355)

Rennes maintained their push for European football next season with a solid 3-1 victory at home to relegation battlers Nice on Monday night. Goals by Julien Feret and Tongo Doumbia had the hosts in control at the break and, althoughFrancois Clerc reduced the deficit, Rennes made sure of the points thanks to Jonathan Pitroipa's 82nd-minute strike. The win means Rennes are now fifth, just two points behind fourth place and a Europa League berth, while Nice stay a point above the drop zone. The home side had a point to prove after last week's humiliating defeat against third-tier Quevilly which cost them a place in the Coupe de France final later this month. With the home crowd whistling their every touch, Rennes looked fired up and Youssouf Hadji's volley after 12 minutes forced Nice goalkeeper David Ospina to save.

Rennes Vs Nice ligue match preview

Nice will be without top scorer Anthony Mounier when they bid to put more daylight between themselves and the Ligue 1 relegation zone against Rennes tomorrow. The Mediterranean club have won their last two matches to climb to 13th place, two points clear of danger in a congested league table, but a third win on the spin could be a tall order with their in-form frontman sidelined.

Rennes are looking to bounce back with a strong showing after their shock loss to Quevilly in the semi-finals of the Coupe de France in midweek. Coach Frederic Antonetti was highly critical of the 2-1 loss which cost Rennes a place in the final against Lyon on April 28, saying that he could not ``defend the indefensible''. Antonetti has demanded an improvement tomorrow night, and will be boosted by the return of Onyekachi Apam from suspension, although Kader Mangane remains on the sidelines with an ankle injury.

Ligue 1 round-up Montpellier suffer surprise defeat, Lille thump Ajaccio

Ligue 1 leaders Montpellier slumped to a shock defeat at Lorient on Sunday, but Paris St Germain could not capitalise.
photo_1334510478752-1-0.jpg (512×400)
A Henri Bedimo own goal on 69 minutes saw Lorient take the lead against Montpellier, who then slipped even further behind when substitute Joel Campbell found the net eight minutes later.
Olivier Giroud pulled a goal back for the Ligue 1 pacesetters soon afterwards but the hosts held on for the win. Second-placed Paris St Germain missed the chance to draw level with Montpellier at the top after being held to a 1-1 draw at bottom side Auxerre in the late game. Nene put Carlo Ancelotti's side ahead in the 23rd minute but Auxerre substitute Anthony Le Tallec netted an equaliser with four minutes remaining to snatch a point.
Third-placed Lille breathed fresh life back into their fading title hopes with a 4-1 mauling of AC Ajaccio. Lille's chances of retaining their title looked to have suffered a potentially decisive setback when last weekend's defeat to Brest left them 10 points behind Montpellier, but they reduced the gap to seven after cruising past lowly Ajaccio. A 16th-minute own goal from Yoann Poulard set Lille on their way, Joe Cole then added a second before the break and late strikes from Gianni Bruno and Eden Hazard, from the penalty spot, sealed the win.Ajaccio netted an injury-time goal from Frederic Sammaritano, but it was nothing more than a consolation for a side who saw their five-match unbeaten run came to an end.
St Etienne's hopes of securing European football next season were boosted by a 2-1 home win over relegation-threatened Brest. Although a UEFA Champions League spot may be beyond Christophe Galtier's men, a fourth-placed finish and Europa League football is not and, after this win, looks a distinct possibility. Max Gradel's penalty and Bakary Sako's winner either side of Issam Jemaa's equaliser proved enough, with Les Verts moving into fifth.

Football liga match preview St Etienne Vs Brest

St Ettiene lack the typical central forward and this is the reason for their good away record and the inconsistent performances at home. Rivierre is not suited for crosses, and the opposition defenses could handle well when visiting St Etienne due to their "easy-to-be-predicted" attacks.

But Brest have more than half a dozen important players that are unavailable for this fixture. The newly promoted team has made several surprises in Ligue 1, but here they just do not have the experience and the players to put yet another surprise.

Lorient Vs Montpellier football lifa match preview

108502hp2.jpg (570×355)

Montpellier coach Rene Girard takes his Ligue 1 leaders to relegation-threatened Lorient tomorrow insisting his young side still have a long way to go before they claim the title. Girard's men went three points clear of Paris St Germain at the top after a superb 3-1 midweek win at Marseille, but Girard fears the experience of their rivals could yet prove to be a crucial factor.

Lorient dropped back into the relegation zone after their second consecutive defeat at Nice last Sunday, but their coach Christian Gourcuff has called on his side not to panic in their bid to beat the drop.

Utd coach confirms Hazard chase

Ferguson eyes up move for Lille ace

edenhazardceleb20120303_576x324.jpg (800×450)

Manchester United coach Rene Meulensteen has admitted Eden Hazard is on Sir Alex Ferguson's wanted list.

Hazard is being chased by a host of clubs across Europe, with the Belgium international expected to leave Lille in the summer. United, Manchester City and Tottenham have all watched the schemer in action as they weigh up moves for Hazard at the end of the season. Hazard has previously admitted he was flattered by United's reported interest in his services and now Meulensteen has confirmed the 21-year-old is highly thought of at Old Trafford.
"The manager wanted to see (Eden) Hazard by himself. That's a sign he thinks it's an interesting player. We talked a lot about him," Meulensteen told Voetbal International"For a club it's important that you keep refreshing your squad. "Hazard is a special talent, but it always takes a while. As (an) example, we followed David de Gea for a long time before we got him. "Ferguson wants to know the character of the player. Because of that he's going to look himself for players. Hazard is 'the man' at Lille. Ferguson wanted to see if that had an influence on him."

Lazio lead Ederson pursuit

Serie A highflyers have held talks with midfielder's agent

Lazio are in "pole position" to sign Lyon midfielder Ederson, according to the Brazilian's agent Antonio Caliendo.
The 26-year-old has decided not to renew his contract with the French side after on-going talks finally broke down, culminating in a lack of game time for Ederson. Lazio have held talks with the former Nice man and a free transfer to the Stadio Olimpico is on the cards, although an agreement is yet to be reached. "Ederson decided not to sign a new contract with Olympique Lyonnais and for this reason they are not playing him," said Caliendo. "As for the future, Lazio is in pole position. We met with them, but for now nothing is closed because they're focused on the race for third place [in Serie A]."

Olympique de Marseille VS Montpellier football liga match preview

Marseille are on their worst run of form for 50 years. Didier Deschamps' men have not kept a clean sheet in ten league games. L'OM have only picked up nine league points in 2012, a record only beaten by two sides in the dropzone.

Marseille play Lyon in the Coupe de la Ligue Final on Saturday, aiming for their third straight title. Montpellier' have failed to win in 16 visits to Stade Velodrome. Rene Girard's side lost 4-0 to their southern rivals in this fixture last season. Two of Montpellier's last three goals against OM have come from own goals. The Ligue 1 leaders have only won one of their previous six away games.

JONES DELIGHTS IN OWLS VICTORY

Sheffield Wednesday boss Dave Jones hailed his team's effort as they made it four wins in a row with a 3-0 victory at home to Oldham on Monday.

Gary Madine scored in the first half at Hillsborough before Miguel Llera and Ryan Lowe made the winning margin more comfortable after the break.

Jones, whose side moved up to second in League One, said: "Coming off a hard-fought win it feels fantastic. "We had two games in three days and it showed, we were tired but found an extra bit of something and I have nothing but admiration for the players. "They deserve a slap on the back. "Winning helps our cause with the feelgood factor, not just in football but in life. We have a great attitude in our dressing room. It wasn't the prettiest performance you'll ever see but it was a real effort from start to finish."

Meanwhile, Nice took an important step towards survival with an important home win over relegation rivals Lorient.
And Caen picked up three precious points in their fight against the drop with a slender victory at home to Bordeaux.
Paris Saint-Germain recorded a much needed 2-1 home win against arch-rivals Marseille at the Parc des Princes to join Montpellier at the top of the Ligue 1 table.
Jeremy Menez opened the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti's men who are looking to win their first Ligue 1 title in 18 years after just six minutes, but the visitors levelled soon after half-time thanks to Andre Ayew's effort on 59 minutes.

Caen Vs Bordeaux football liga match preview

Caen defender Jeremy Sorbon has called for double the effort from his side ahead of tomorrow`s Ligue 1 clash against Bordeaux. While the Girondins are sitting comfortably in eighth place in the overall standings, Caen are in bottom three and in need of a vital win at home.

Bordeaux striker Yoan Gouffran expects an emotional return to his former club due to their precarious league position. Gouffran, who left Caen for Bordeaux in 2008, admitted it was tough to see Franck Dumas's side so low down in the table.

Ancelotti targets new signings

 Italian targets victory against Marseille

Ancelotti.jpg (460×276)

Carlo Ancelotti has revealed he aims to bring in up to four new players during the summer transfer window as he looks to rebuild his Paris St Germain side.
The former AC Milan and Chelsea coach claims that he wants the club, which are currently sitting behind Ligue 1 leaders Montpellier on goal difference, to have more of a 'French soul'. Ancelotti has pointed to the fact that PSG do not have a backbone of home-grown talent in their side which he wants to rectify in time for next season.
"The team will be reinforced. We'll sign on three or four players, but I want PSG to have a French soul because the feeling of belonging helps to make the difference," Ancelotti told Gazzetta dello Sport"At Chelsea, there's (Ashley) Cole, (Frank) Lampard, (John) Terry; at Milan there's (Massimo) Ambrosini, (Alessandro) Nesta, (Gennaro) Gattuso, (Ignazio) Abate, (Luca) Antonini; at Real Madrid there's (Iker) Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Xabi Alonso. Here (at PSG) there's (Mamadou) Sakhos, (Mohamed) Sissoko, (Mathieu) Bodmer, (Guillaume) Hoarau and (Christophe) Jallet who must play this role."
Ancelotti's side have not won a game since March 11th and lost at lowly Nancy last weekend which has given unheralded leaders Montpellier the advantage in the title run-in. The Italian claims Sunday's match against Marseille is an "excellent chance to relaunch ourselves". He added: "It's also an opportunity for them because they're going through a long stretch of negative results. But they have experience and I don't think they'll be weakened by their elimination from the Champions League."

Nene apologises for bad reaction

Paris St Germain winger Nene has apologised for his reaction to being told he would start last weekend's game at Nancy on the bench and declared himself fully committed to the capital club.

Nene, 30, was frustrated to learn he would not start Saturday night's encounter at the Stade Marcel Picot, which PSG ended up losing 2-1 to leave them level on points with Montpellier and having played a game more than their fellow Ligue 1 pacesetters.

The Brazilian spoke to the club's website to clear up what had happened and admitted he had displayed the wrong attitude. The player's future at the Parc des Princes had been placed in doubt by his behaviour, with reports suggesting he had threatened never to wear the PSG shirt again. But he was quick to play down such talk, adding: "Absolute rubbish, again. I love this club and I fight hard every day, not just in the games but in training as well. I always give 100% and I think the supporters know it.Carlo Ancelotti's side could take a step towards the Ligue 1 title with victory in Sunday night's Classico against ninth-placed Marseille.
